A father of two, Aminu Kabiru, has told a Shari’a Court in Kaduna, Kaduna State, that his deep love for his wife affected his ability to concentrate at work and limited his capacity to provide for the family.
Kabiru made the disclosure while responding to his estranged wife’s application for divorce through Khul’i proceedings.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the man said his strong affection for his wife distracted him from his work and affected his earnings.
He pleaded with the court to give him more time to reconcile with his wife, arguing that their marriage should be preserved for the sake of their two young children, who are both under two years old.
The wife, through her counsel, Abubakar Jibril, however, told the court that she no longer wanted to remain in the marriage.
Jibril said the woman had been living at her parents’ home for the past eight months without receiving adequate care and support from her husband.
He told the court that the couple got married in 2024 and had two children, aged 16 months and two months respectively.
The lawyer also informed the court that the complainant was willing to return the N100,000 dowry she received in order to end the marriage.
The presiding judge, Malam Mu’awiya Shehu, sought clarification on the amount of dowry paid during the marriage.
Kabiru confirmed that N100,000 was the correct amount but argued that his expenses on his wife before their marriage were higher than the dowry.
He asked the court to take the expenses into consideration.
The judge subsequently adjourned the matter to allow Kabiru to submit details of the expenses he claimed to have incurred.
The case will resume with the court considering the husband’s claims before determining the wife’s divorce application.
