A 26-year-old unemployed man has been sentenced to one month in prison by the Kwadaso Circuit Court in Kumasi, Ghana, for attempting to steal a police armoured vehicle at Nkawie in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
According to Adom Online, the convict, Ebenezer Frimpong, a native of Antwi Agyeikrom in the Atwima Mponua District, was arrested on April 15, 2026, after allegedly driving away with the police vehicle.
Frimpong initially pleaded not guilty but changed his plea to guilty during proceedings on Tuesday, July 21, after a psychiatric evaluation conducted at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital declared him fit to stand trial.
The psychiatric report, which had been pending for several months, was presented before the court presided over by His Honour Jephthah Appau, who subsequently convicted and sentenced him based on his guilty plea.
The court heard that on April 14, 2026, General Lance Corporal Joshua Denkyi was conveying an armoured police vehicle with registration number GP 1131 to a workshop for servicing.
While on the journey, the police driver reportedly developed a stomach upset and parked the vehicle near Nkawie Market to buy medication from a nearby pharmacy.
During his brief absence, Frimpong allegedly entered the vehicle and drove off towards the Nkawie-Abuakwa-Kumasi Road.
The police officer immediately raised an alarm, leading to the arrest of the suspect at Mim, near Abuakwa, with the assistance of regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) officers.
Frimpong had earlier pleaded not guilty when he was first arraigned before the same court on May 5, 2026.
Before sentencing, the presiding judge confirmed that the convict understood the implication of changing his plea, to which he responded in the affirmative.
Justice Jephthah Appau explained that the one-month jail term was imposed because Frimpong was a young offender who did not waste the court’s time after admitting to the offence.
Police prosecutor, ASP Albert Asagre, had urged the court to deal with the convict in accordance with the law following his guilty plea.
