The teacher accused of flogging a 12-year-old pupil to death at a school in Adazi-Enu, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State has voluntarily surrendered to the police.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed that the suspect, Mrs. Dim Ebere, 47, of Adazi-Ani, reported herself at the Neni Police Station in the same local government area.
Mrs. Ebere was earlier declared wanted after the boy reportedly died from injuries allegedly sustained during the flogging, prompting the police to launch a manhunt.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect surrendered following sustained operations by the Safe School Protection Squad in collaboration with officers of the Neni Divisional Police Headquarters.
Ikenga explained that the breakthrough was achieved through continuous engagement with stakeholders and community leaders in Adazi-Ani.
He disclosed that the suspect is currently in police custody and would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, where investigations into the case would be concluded.
The police also assured the family of the deceased and members of the public that the command remained committed to ensuring justice in the matter.
The command appealed to residents to remain calm, avoid taking the law into their own hands, and continue to provide useful information that would support the ongoing investigation and other policing activities across the state.
