A woman, Aderonke, has dragged her husband, Olamiposi, before a Grade A Customary Court sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, over alleged neglect, battery and lack of affection.
The plaintiff told the court that her husband started showing signs of disinterest in their marriage from the very first day of their union.
Aderonke alleged that Olamiposi abandoned her on their wedding night to attend a political meeting, describing the action as proof that his political ambition meant more to him than their relationship.
She explained that she had waited throughout the night for her husband, hoping they would consummate their marriage, but he did not return until the following morning.
According to her, Olamiposi returned the next day without apologising for leaving her alone on what was supposed to be a special moment in their marriage.
The plaintiff further accused her husband of being violent and abusive, alleging that he started beating her early in the marriage.
She told the court that one of the assaults left her hospitalised after sustaining injuries during an attack by the defendant.
Aderonke said the marriage became unbearable due to constant neglect, emotional distress and physical abuse.
She added that they hardly spent quality time together, as her husband allegedly criticised everything she did and never showed care or affection towards her.
According to her, she eventually moved out of their matrimonial home after enduring years of hardship and frustration in the relationship.
The plaintiff stated that she and her husband have now lived separately for six years.
She also informed the court that the marriage produced two children, a boy and a girl, who are currently in her custody.
Aderonke urged the court to dissolve the marriage and grant her custody of the children, while also directing Olamiposi to take responsibility for their welfare, education and healthcare.
She specifically requested that the defendant be ordered to pay N100,000 monthly for the upkeep of the children.
The defendant, Olamiposi, was absent in court despite reportedly being served with hearing notices and court summons.
The President of the court, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, adjourned the case till July for hearing of the defence and ordered that a fresh hearing notice be issued and served on the defendant.
