A suspect linked to the death of a student of the College of Nursing, Obowo, identified as Wendy Achumba, has allegedly confessed to the crime in a viral video circulating on social media.
The suspect, identified as Onyema Okonkwo, was reportedly arrested by youths of Umuadara, Umulogho in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State following investigations into the incident.
Community sources disclosed that the arrest followed growing suspicion and tension within the area over the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
The operation was reportedly coordinated by the youth leader of the community, Chidiebere Iweajunwa, alongside other youths who tracked down the suspect.
In the viral video, the suspect allegedly narrated how he and another individual identified as Emmanuel visited the victim’s lodge around 7 p.m. on the day of the incident.
He claimed they discovered that no one else was around before proceeding to the victim’s room, where they allegedly demanded sex from her.
According to the suspect, the victim resisted and reportedly injured his face with her fingernails while struggling to fend them off.
The suspect further alleged that they eventually overpowered the nursing student and raped her multiple times before attacking her with weapons.
He claimed he assaulted the victim with a wooden object while his accomplice allegedly stabbed her with a knife during the incident.
The confession video has since generated outrage online, with many Nigerians demanding justice for the deceased student.
A community source disclosed that the late student was alone in the apartment at the time of the incident because her roommates had travelled for their nursing programme experience.
The source added that the house owner resides in the United States, while three nursing students occupied the apartment before the other two temporarily travelled, leaving the deceased alone in the compound.
