Tension gripped Ayetoro/Iloro High School in Iloro-Ekiti on Thursday morning after students were reportedly dismissed from school following rumours of suspected bandits operating around the community.
Videos circulating online showed frightened students running along the roadside in panic as residents and security operatives tried to ensure their safety. Eyewitnesses said many of the students were seen seeking help and transport away from the area amid fears of a possible attack.
Although no attack was reported, the incident has sparked fresh concerns over insecurity around schools in rural communities across Ekiti and parts of the South-West.
Residents have since called on the government and security agencies to strengthen security presence around schools, including the establishment of military checkpoints and increased patrols to prevent possible attacks and reassure parents and students.
The development comes amid rising security concerns in parts of the South-West following recent reports of kidnappings and attacks targeting schools and communities in neighbouring states.
