Tension is rising in Osun State following a series of incidents that have heightened religious sensitivities, raising fears of a possible clash between adherents of different faiths.
The situation follows a recent controversy involving a group of Christians, reportedly led by Pastor Odedoyin Ezekiel, who visited the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove to conduct prayer sessions targeted at the River Osun deity and other traditional beliefs.
The Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, a UNESCO-recognised heritage site, holds deep spiritual significance for traditional worshippers, who gather annually to celebrate the River Osun goddess, revered as a symbol of fertility, prosperity, and wellbeing.
In a video that circulated widely, the pastor and members of his congregation, dressed in white garments, were seen praying fervently at the grove. During the session, the pastor declared that the deity would no longer receive sacrifices and stated that its influence had been subdued through spiritual authority.
The development drew strong reactions from traditionalists and cultural stakeholders, many of whom described the act as a violation of cultural heritage and a potential trigger for religious conflict.
The Baba Oosa of Osogboland, Prince Osunyemi Ifarinu Ifabode, condemned the incident, describing it as sacrilegious. He called on relevant authorities, including security agencies and the state government, to take necessary action and ensure that those involved are held accountable. He also raised concerns over what he described as religious intolerance.
In what appeared to be a retaliatory move, another video showed a group of individuals approaching a church while chanting a modified version of a popular Yoruba Christian song in reverse. The group was seen moving towards the premises with a dog tied to a rope.
Footage from the scene showed one of the individuals pouring a drink on the church floor, while others questioned two men dressed in white about their alleged involvement in the earlier incident at the sacred grove. The individuals were also instructed to record the unfolding events.
During the incident, the group was seen carrying out ritualistic actions within the church premises. A dog was brought forward and later killed, while chants associated with traditional practices were made. The group also splashed the animal’s blood on objects within the church and on some individuals present.
One of the individuals was heard accusing the earlier visitors to the sacred grove of disrespecting traditional heritage, warning against a repeat of such actions. The group also instructed those present to relay their message to their church leader.
The incidents have since generated widespread reactions, with concerns growing over the potential escalation of religious tension in the state.
