The President of Ghana, John Mahama, has stated that he prays regularly for Nigeria to make significant progress, noting that instability in the country could lead to increased migration to Ghana.
Mahama made the remark while speaking at an award ceremony, where he emphasised the importance of Nigeria’s stability to the overall development of the West African region.
He explained that Nigeria remains of critical security and economic interest to Ghana, adding that the prosperity of Nigeria directly impacts neighbouring countries.
The Ghanaian leader noted that with Nigeria’s large population, any economic or social challenges could result in migration pressures on smaller countries like Ghana.
Mahama stated that a thriving Nigeria would reduce the likelihood of large numbers of Nigerians seeking opportunities in Ghana, which he described as a smaller nation with limited capacity.
He further explained that Nigeria’s success would translate into regional stability and shared economic growth across West Africa.
The President added that he offers daily prayers for Nigeria, expressing hope that the country would address its challenges and achieve sustainable development.
He stressed that Ghana’s interest lies in seeing Nigeria succeed, noting that the well-being of both countries is closely linked.
