Lecturers at Imo State University, IMSU, have declared that they will not evaluate or grade examination scripts of students who participate in examinations conducted during the ongoing strike.
Chairperson of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, IMSU branch, Stephen Oguji, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Saturday.
He informed students currently undertaking examinations that the union was strongly committed to ensuring that they did not graduate through a process whose integrity could be questioned.
Oguji said the union condemned and rejected the conduct of examinations amid the ongoing ASUU strike.
He explained that the lecturers responsible for teaching, assessing and grading the students were currently on strike, adding that the ongoing examinations were not designed by the lecturers and would not be evaluated or graded by them.
He urged students not to jeopardise their examinations or risk losing their academic session, stressing that the union did not want them to graduate through a process whose credibility might later be questioned.
Oguji said the students’ real adversaries were not their lecturers but those in positions of authority who had the capacity to resolve the issues that led to the strike.
He urged the students to work with the union in demanding that the state government implement the Federal Government-ASUU 2025 agreement on university funding.
The ASUU chairperson said the union was advocating for an educational system that would function effectively for students, lecturers and future generations.
He maintained that lecturers were willing to return to the classrooms because they wanted examinations to be conducted properly and students to graduate with pride and legitimacy.
Oguji appealed to the relevant authorities to implement the agreement, which he said was aimed at improving the working conditions of union members.
