A student of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, Ademiju Ayeni, from the Department of Estate Management, was on Saturday stabbed to death during the convention of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Joint Campus Committee, Osun State Chapter, in Osogbo.
According to multiple sources who participated in the convention, Ayeni was allegedly stabbed by a member of the security committee of the programme.
An official of NANS South-West, who spoke with Punch on condition of anonymity, said the security committee member, who was armed with a knife, stabbed Ayeni while attempting to prevent him from gaining access to the venue of the convention.
The source said Ayeni was rushed to a private hospital in Osogbo, where he was confirmed dead. His remains were subsequently deposited at the morgue of the Osun State University Teaching Hospital.
It was also gathered that the incident was reported at the Dada Estate Police Station.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abiodun Ojelabi, told the publication that there had been an earlier disagreement between Ayeni and some individuals during the convention held at the state NUJ Press Centre in Osogbo.
Ojelabi said the disagreement was resolved, adding that Ayeni later complained of chest pain after the participants dispersed.
According to him, it was discovered upon examination that Ayeni had sustained a stab wound to his chest and was subsequently taken to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
The police spokesperson said the deceased’s body had been deposited at a morgue and that an autopsy would be conducted.
However, the NANS South-West Coordinator, Josiah Adeyemo, said the incident was cult-related, noting that the alleged perpetrator had not been identified.
Adeyemo said the fight lasted for a few minutes before Ayeni was stabbed, despite the convention itself having proceeded peacefully.
He expressed concern over the incident, saying he could not immediately determine what triggered the confrontation outside the gate of the venue.
