US President Donald Trump has warned his supporters that he could face impeachment if Republicans lose control of Congress in November’s midterm elections.
Speaking at a rally in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Trump urged Republicans to vote in large numbers, warning that they would “lose everything” if Democrats took control of Congress.
Trump said he expected Democrats to impeach him if they won control of Congress, although he claimed they would not have a clear reason for doing so.
Trump is the only US president to have been impeached twice, but he was acquitted by the Senate on both occasions.
He warned that a Democratic victory could threaten his administration’s policies, including tax cuts and immigration measures.
Trump also claimed that taxes would rise, wages would fall and businesses would leave the US if Democrats controlled Congress.
US Democrats are widely expected to make gains in the House of Representatives in November, while control of the Senate remains more competitive.
Trump was campaigning in South Carolina for Darline Graham, who was appointed to the Senate in July following the death of her brother, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
He urged his supporters to treat the midterm elections as though he were personally on the ballot, saying his political influence was at stake.
Trump called on voters to turn out and support Republicans, urging them to “pretend” that he was on the ballot and vote.
