Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has alleged that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar financed an impeachment plot against him with N5 million during his first term in office.
Obasanjo made the allegation while responding to comments by former Ogun State Governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba, regarding the political developments that preceded the 2003 general elections.
According to Obasanjo, the late Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Na’Abba, was persuaded to commence impeachment proceedings against him after meeting with Atiku at the Presidential Villa.
He alleged that the meeting took place on a Friday when he was away from the office, adding that Atiku convinced Na’Abba that he should serve only one term as President.
Obasanjo further claimed that Atiku provided Na’Abba with N5 million to facilitate the impeachment process.
The former President said the alleged meeting, the financial transaction and other related developments were monitored, documented and later reported to him by his Chief of Staff, whom he described as a professional intelligence officer.
Despite the alleged impeachment plot, Obasanjo said he was not disturbed because he believed there was no constitutional basis for removing him from office.
