The Osun Masterminds, TOM, has raised concern over the worsening security situation in Osun State ahead of the August 15 governorship election, warning that increasing political violence could undermine the credibility of the poll.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday in Osogbo, the group’s Executive Director, Prof. Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli said recent political activities in the state had become increasingly tense, creating fear among residents.
The group condemned the growing wave of election-related violence, particularly the killing of young people, describing the trend as a threat to democracy and public safety.
It cited the recent killings of 14-year-old Ezekiel Olugbemiga in Ilobu, Kolade Eluyera in Ikire and Aderogba in Esa-Oke, alongside several reported attacks across the state.
The organisation called on security agencies to ensure that those behind the killings and other violent crimes are arrested and prosecuted without regard to political affiliation or status.
It also expressed concern over what it described as the growing link between cult-related activities and political violence in the state, urging politicians to desist from using criminal elements to settle political disputes.
The Osun Masterminds further decried the spread of fake news, cyberbullying and misinformation on social media, saying the trend was worsening political tension and contributing to violent clashes.
The group urged security agencies to enforce the Cybercrimes Act against individuals using digital platforms to spread false information or incite violence.
It also called on media organisations, civil society groups and political parties to promote responsible use of social media through fact-checking initiatives and strict adherence to a digital code of conduct.
The organisation appealed to political parties, traditional rulers, religious leaders and other stakeholders to promote peace before, during and after the governorship election.
It urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure transparency, fairness and equal treatment of all political parties throughout the electoral process.
The group also advised youths not to allow themselves to be used as agents of violence, stressing that peaceful participation remains the most effective way to strengthen democracy.
The Osun Masterminds accused some politicians of harbouring cultists and political thugs within their structures, calling on political actors to dismantle such networks ahead of the election.
It urged the Nigeria Police Force to intensify patrols, remain neutral, rebuild public confidence and ensure the arrest and prosecution of individuals involved in politically motivated violence.
The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to a peaceful and credible governorship election, urging all stakeholders to ensure that the August 15 poll is decided through the ballot rather than violence.
