Senegalese-American singer, Akon, has described working with late pop icon Michael Jackson as one of the greatest moments of his music career.
Speaking during a recent episode of the We Need To Talk podcast, the ‘Oh Africa’ crooner said taking a photograph with Michael Jackson remained his proudest celebrity moment despite already being famous at the time.
Akon explained that he grew up admiring the late singer and considered himself insignificant compared to the global influence and legacy of Jackson, whom he described as an idol to millions around the world.
The singer also reflected on his contributions to the growth of African music, particularly Afrobeats, revealing that he once worked closely with Nigerian music stars including P-Square and Wizkid.
He clarified that although he did not directly sign Wizkid, he was involved through Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment, where the singer was signed at the time.
Akon further praised Nigerians for their contribution to the global success of Afrobeats, describing them as the most intelligent people in the world.
According to him, Nigerians have played a remarkable role in expanding the reach and influence of Afrobeats across the international music industry.
He said, “My photo with Michael Jackson is my most proudest photo. I was already a full blown celebrity at the point the photo was taken. But I am a child compared to this man (Michael Jackson).
“I was so happy because I grew up looking up to him. He is like everybody’s Idol,
“Nigerians are the most intelligent people on the planet. They have done amazingly well with Afrobeats,”.
